{"id":289,"date":"2012-12-02T18:42:54","date_gmt":"2012-12-03T02:42:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theloggingroadcyclist.com\/?page_id=289"},"modified":"2012-12-02T18:44:52","modified_gmt":"2012-12-03T02:44:52","slug":"a-lexicon-for-lost","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/theloggingroadcyclist.com\/?page_id=289","title":{"rendered":"A Lexicon for Lost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The American Heritage Dictionary defines:\u00a0<strong>lost\u00a0<\/strong><em>v<\/em>. <strong>7.a. <\/strong>\u00a0To let (oneself) become unable to find the way.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0That&#8217;s all well and good as far as it goes, but as we in Oregon have many words for rain, and the Inuit for snow, The Logging Road Cyclist \u00a0has found it necessary to divvy this up a bit more. \u00a0He proposes:<\/p>\n<p><strong>lost\u00a0<\/strong>To let (oneself) become unable to get to where one <em>needs<\/em> to go (eg. &#8220;TLRC could not find his way back to the car and died of hypothermia&#8221;).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_290\" style=\"width: 215px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-290\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-290 \" title=\"boone\" src=\"https:\/\/theloggingroadcyclist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/boone-205x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"205\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theloggingroadcyclist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/boone-205x300.jpg 205w, https:\/\/theloggingroadcyclist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/boone.jpg 341w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 205px) 100vw, 205px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-290\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;I cain&#8217;t say I was ever lost, but I was once bewildered for three days.&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>bewildered\u00a0<\/strong>To let (oneself) become unable to get to where one <em>wants<\/em> to go (eg. &#8220;For the third time TLRC was unable to decipher the route to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain and had to cut his ride short and go back to the car, to which he clearly remembered the way&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Failure To Meet Objective, or <strong>FTMO\u00a0<\/strong>is a synonym for <em>bewildered<\/em> that TLRC finds useful in communicating the status of a ride to interested parties.<\/p>\n<p>TLRC is the first to admit that this may be slicing the salami pretty thin. There are certainly circumstances under which <em>bewildered=lost<\/em> to a very high degree of approximation. For example. Last summer, TLRC did Velodirt&#8217;s &#8220;Rapture&#8221;, involving 70+ miles of riding and many thousands of feet of climbing. About 20 miles from the end of the ride, TLRC found himself <em>bewildered<\/em>. Now, there is simply <em>no way\u00a0<\/em>that TLRC (given his finite capacity for pain) \u00a0could have backtracked all the way to the car, no matter how well he knew which way to go. Thus, minus a way forward, TLRC was essentially lost.
